Novi Sad is the capital of the Vojvodina, a region of more than 26 ethnic groups. The largest ethnic groups are Serbs with 65% and Hungarians with 14% (others are below 3%). From time to time, several international organisations, including the European Parliament and Human Rights Watch, have expressed concern about rising levels of ethnic tension and related violent incidents in the Vojvodina. It is part of Serbia, which officially applied for EU membership in 2009. The EU unfroze the trade agreement with Serbia and Serbia entered the visa free regime also in 2009. The pre-condition was a full cooperation with the Hague tribunal. For a long time, Serbia was seen as an aggressor, defending ethnic purity whatever the price. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novi_Sad
