CLOUDr - information architecture research

posted by: Tristan Schulze

The CLOUDR system is a discursive internet platform which serves as a tool for research, documentation and mediation within the framework of Europe (to the power of) n.

Europe (the the Power of) n discusses multiple and heterogeneous positions which need to be reflected, mediated and documented in all their complexity and diversity. Due to this need, a multidiscipliary research team started to develop a content management system which is capable of mediating the diversity and complexities of the current shifting conditions of European social, political, cultural and economic relations. The system enables the user to track the shifting of concepts and changing of ideas over time, to find a way to make connections and to bring into view the multiple and heterogeneous positions. These positions which are not exclusively about Europe, but also about regions outside of or peripheral in Europe, contribute to debate about what Europe is and what it can be from the perspective of contemporary art. The online platform was initially inspired by the principle of the semantic web. However, in order to overcome the shortages of a purely semantic system it has been developed into a hybrid – in the sense of its logic as well as regarding the data management system and its visual appearance. As such, it is based on human editorial mediation and suitable algorithms. The current project team consists of people from different academic and professional backgrounds, coming from cultural science, media science, computer science, and interaction design. The current participants are: Tristan Schulze - conception, information architecture, user interface design, development Vanessa Boni - curator, information architecture Andreja Hribernik - media theory, curator Konrad Abicht - development, information architecture Barbara Steiner - consulting, concept, culture science Christopher Koehler - conception, information architecture

Europe (to the power of) n: Mediation

The visual identity, spatial design/architecture, interaction design/computer sciences and modes of documentation play an important role in Europe (to the power of) n.

Organization of information

One major discourse of the CLOUDr research project is the question for alternative organization of information and knowledge. Emerging technologies enable humans to organize and percieve information radically different. How can machine learning, semantic web technolgies support this movement?

Reading Complexity

The major research discourse with the development of a suitable information architecture for the project Europe (the the Power of n) are the difficulties and possibilites to mediate complex informations networks visually and context wise.
